Mental Health and Addiction Forum 2025

On October 1st, the Local 222 Community Services Committee proudly hosted an Addictions and Mental Health Forum, bringing together members and the community for an open and inspiring discussion. The event featured powerful guest speakers Kendra Fisher and Kent Hickey, who shared their personal journeys and professional insights on overcoming challenges, building resilience, and supporting mental wellness.
The forum provided an important opportunity to break the stigma surrounding mental health and addiction, promote understanding, and connect attendees with valuable resources. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this event such a meaningful success!

Frost Fest 2024

November 23rd was our 3rd annual Frost Fest event at Local 222. This year was a huge success with lots of different vendors and so many excited kids. This year we were able to have Pepper the clown who made lots of Holiday inspired balloon animals as well as a face painter. Special thanks to Jeff Grey, Rob Romano and the Retiree Executive Board we were able to have Pepper the clown and a Onella the fantastic face painter join the festivities. 

20th Annual Walk for Suicide Awareness 2024

The event was held in support of those affected by suicide and assists in raising awareness within the community. All donations raised go directly to the Suicide Survivors Initiatives run by Distress Centre Durham. Many Unifor Local 222 members showed to up in support.

Local 222 Blue Jays Game 2024

Local 222 attended the Blue Jays game on Saturday July 20th held by the Recreation Committee. Members were able to get a ride from 1 of the 2 buses that departed from the Union hall. The  Rec committee had lots of giveaways and a 50/50 draw that was won by Karie Davidson from the GM unit. 

Communities with Brooms 2024

The Environment Committee attended the 15th annual Communities with Brooms event at the Oshawa City Hall on Tuesday April 23rd. The event aims to clean up downtown Oshawa’s street, foster community pride, build partnerships and raise awareness regarding clean and safe communities. Environmental Committee Antonella Del Sordo, Melissa Hamel, and Samantha Chinelli were joined by Local President Jeff Gray, Financial Secretary Rob Romano and Local 222 member Karen Barker. Great Work Team!

Action Centre Grand Opening 2024

The opening of the Action Centre for Lear Ajax had their official opening on March 19th. Many thanks to all that attended and showed their support to the members of Lear Ajax who have lost there job due to the closure at the end of December of 2023. The Action Centre provides support for un- and underemployed Unifor members including organizing events such as job fairs, resume building work shops and also provides direct support to members seeking new employment, retraining and skill upgrading.

Bean Bag Toss 2024

March 16th the Recreational Committee hosted their second Bean Bag Toss Tournament at Local 222. Jordan Parent and Derek Owen were the Champions of the tournament with Trevor Clarke and Steve Van Hemmen a close second. Congratulations to Maxine Geypens who was the winner of the 50/50 draw. Keep watching for upcoming events hosted by the Local 222 Rec Committee.

International Women's Day 2024

On Sunday March 10th Local 222 Women’s Committee hosted their annual International Women’s Day event. Many special guest speakers attended including Unifor National President Lana Payne. The United Nations theme for IWD 2024 was “Invest in women: Accelerate progress” – a call to corporations and governments around the world to address alarming gender inequalities that remain one of the greatest human right challenges.

Frost Fest 2023

December 18th Local 222 hosted the 2nd annual Frost Fest at the hall. This year was a huge success with 97 kids and families signed up to see Santa. Members from different units and retirees also participate in a members market, which they had an opportunity to sell various handmade items that they have created. During this time local 222 also collected Non-perishable food items, new unwrapped toys, hats, mittens, scarves and socks were hung on our tree of hope, all in which will be delivered to Simcoe Hall Settlement House in time for the winter and holiday season.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes 2023

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is a yearly event hosted by the Bethesda House in Bowmanville. Together, we are creating a positive impact, promoting awareness, and supporting those who are experiencing gender-based violence and abuse.  Local 222 President Jeff Gray, Vice President Chris Waugh and members of Local 222 joined in the walk on August 19th, 2023. 

Tears To Hope Relay

The Tears to Hope Society created this fundraising event five years ago. The goal is to support the families of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls & two spirits relations (MMIWG2S). This year Unifor has partnered with the Society to hold solidarity run/walks across the country. Here is what happened at Local 222.
